Senator Steve Newman Presents General Assembly Resolution
General Assembly Resolution Presented in Honor of General George M. Snead, Jr.
Lynchburg, Virginia — April 2013
Virginia’s 23rd district Senator Steve Newman will present a special General Assembly resolution, honoring the distinguished military career of recently deceased Brigadier General George M. Snead, Jr., USA (Ret.), to his widow and family at a ceremony to be held on monday, April 29 at 1:30PM on the commons at Westminster Canterbury in Lynchburg.
Noting “With great sadness the loss of an exceptional Virginian and American patriot”, the Senator Newman sponsored resolution, approved by the senate with concurrence by the house of delegates, honors General Snead “as an expression of the general assembly’s great respect and esteem for his memory and for his outstanding service to the nation.”
A Lynchburg native, General Snead graduated from Lynchburg’s E.C. Glass High School, earned his Bachelor’s degree at Virginia Military Institute, a Master’s Degree from the University of Illinois, and a doctorate in physics from the University of Virginia.
The resolution, in part, states that General Snead “served the nation with great distinction for three decades in the United Staes Army Signal Corps” during WWII, The Vietnam War and after, commanding various units related to communications, planning and ballistic missile defense “with uncommon intelligence and integrity”.
Mike Snead, one of the General’s five sons, said “Our family appreciates and is honored by this recognition of my father’s contribution to the country he loved, and Senator Newman’s kindness in sponsoring this resolution by the Virginia legislature.”
